Man United news: Ex-Fifa official tips ‘serial offender’ Scott McTominay to now land multiple red cards
Scott McTominay has a growing reputation and his upcoming opponents may exploit it to get him sent off for Man United.
That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider as McTominay escaped a red card as Man United beat Leeds United 4-2 yesterday (20 February).
The Scotland international was shown a yellow card for a foul on Joe Gelhardt in the 77th minute.
As shown on the BBC’s Match of the Day 2 programme, shortly after his first yellow he escaped a second for a foul on Junior Firpo.
McTominay has now picked up eight cautions in the Premier League this season – only Wolves’ Ruben Neves (nine) has more.
Despite his burgeoning reputation, the 25-year-old has not been sent off in his Man United career in any competition.
“He’s a serial offender from this game and other games,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“His reputation is growing and with that, he will come across opponents, tactically, who will react to his aggressive style. They will go down easily, they will apply pressure.
“He is now vulnerable to that reputation that can influence the referee in terms of taking no chance.
“His aggressive style is too aggressive on even some of the smaller things.”

Man United’s win at Old Trafford stretched their lead in fourth position, four points clear of West Ham and Arsenal in fifth and sixth.
However, Arsenal have three games in hand over Ralf Rangnick’s side.
In other news, Ralf Rangnick could be sacked by Man United soon after a ‘massively concerning’ report.
