Man United plan to ‘buy young gem and transform him into superstar’
Man United want to buy a young gem and allow him to grow into a superstar and make his name at the club, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the transfer team at Old Trafford believe that Sunderland’s Chris Rigg would fit that mould.
Football Insider revealed on 1 November that the Black Cats have set their asking price at £20-30million for the 17-year-old as they are unwilling to see him leave.
Chelsea and Real Madrid have also joined United in monitoring the midfielder’s progress, but the Red Devils believe they will be in a strong position to poach him if Sunderland fail to achieve promotion from the Championship.
Regis Le Bris’ side are currently top of the Championship and pushing for promotion back to the Premier League, with Rigg valued as an important part of their plans.
However, Man United want to reestablish their reputation for developing young talent and allowing them to hone their talents at Old Trafford.
Man United plot Chris Rigg move in new superstar verdict
Rigg has already made 38 appearances for Sunderland despite his tender age, and has featured in all 12 of their Championship fixtures so far this season.
Of those 12 appearances, 11 have come from the start as he has established himself as an important player under the guidance of Le Bris, who has a good reputation for youth development.
His performances so far this season saw him pick up the Goal of the Month and Young Player of the Month award in September.
The midfielder is contracted at the Stadium of Light until 2027, but there is a belief Sunderland could be forced to drop their asking price if they fail in their bid for promotion.

Rigg has established himself as one of England’s brightest young prospects and has represented his country on eight occasions at Under-18 level.
Now, United are keen to see the teenager continue his development and become a superstar at Old Trafford much like several England legends of the past.
