Man United set for ‘big’ transfer ‘bonus’ after source’s £50m reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has insisted Manchester United are set for a transfer “bonus” with six players out of contract this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker claimed the Red Devils are set to free up some “big, big wages” from those who will become free agents.

A United source told Football Insider incoming manager (23 April) Erik ten Hag will have overall control over transfers but that he will have to operate under strict financial parameters.

It is understood Ten Hag will have just a £50million budget, with the coffers expected to be boosted by player sales.

Whelan insisted freeing up wages of out of contract players would also help in terms of financial firepower.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “There has got to be patience for Manchester United fans. It’s got to be patience for Manchester United as a club.

“They’re going to lose some players this summer already on free contracts which I think is a bonus. That will free up some big, big wages that some of these players are on.

“Then he’s going to have to take the Ralf Rangnick’s approach, from what he’s seen since he’s been there as well.

“That experience of being around the camp and the players individually. And then he’s got to see it for himself when he gets through the door.

“There’s no doubt there’s a lot of work that needs to be done there. But it’s not going to happen overnight, and it’s certainly not going to happen in one summer.”

Paul Pogba is the most high-profile player out of contract at Old Trafford this summer.

Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata, Lee Grant and Nemanja Matic are also in the final months of their terms.
