Man United tipped to hijack £70m Kalvin Phillips move after source’s update – pundit

Alex McLeish has tipped Man United to hijack a potential West Ham move for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 26-year-old would “enhance” the Red Devils’ midfield.

A West Ham source told Football Insider on Monday (21 March) they are lining up a fresh summer move for £70m-rated Phillips and are prepared to offer him an “enormous” salary.

Leeds United

The Times (20 March) have also credited Aston Villa with an interest in the England international.

Phillips, who has been sidelined through injury since December 2021, has impressed in 41 Premier League appearances since Leeds United’s return to the top flight.

McLeish insisted he can picture the 26-year-old in a Man United shirt.

“He’s a brilliant player and he could grace just about every team in the league,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“There are obviously some world-class players in the league, and Phillips is trying to aspire to that level.

“He’s a player who I think nobody has a bad word to say about him.

“I could see him playing in a Man United shirt. He’d enhance their midfield, that’s for sure.

“He’s certainly got the quality to command a massive fee in this transfer window.”

Man United

Man United sit sixth in the Premier League – four points adrift of a Champions League berth.

Phillips, who has claimed 19 England caps since making his debut in September 2020, is under contract at Elland Road until 2024.
