Mark Lawrenson: Liverpool 28-year-old one of best English PL players

By Danny Wright

Mark Lawrenson has said that he believes Adam Lallana is among the top three English players currently playing in the Premier League

The former Liverpool defender has praised the 28-year-old after he was confirmed as signing a new £110,000-a-week deal at Anfield which potentially keeps him there until 2020, according to ESPN.

Lallana has enjoyed an impressive season so far and has made 27 appearances for Jurgen Klopp in the league this season and has scored seven goals and bagged seven assists.

“This is the first season where we have really seen the best of him,” Lawrenson said to TalkSport. “He has showed flashes before and little periods of five or six games but generally this season – January apart – he has been very, very good.

“You might argue he is up there in the top three of English players playing in the Premier League.

“Sometimes you get players who just want to play, they want to be happy where they are playing, they want to know they are at a good club, and Adam Lallana is very much one of them.”

Lawrenson has clearly been impressed by the former Southampton man, who has altered his style of play this season to suit a more central midfield role. His work off the ball has improved and he offers a lot more off the ball than he used to.

He joined Liverpool in 2014 for £25million but made a slow start to life on Merseyside, however the England international has come into his own under Klopp’s leadership this season.

Liverpool are currently fifth in the Premier League and face a tough run of fixtures where they play Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton in their next five outings.

They beat Tottenham 2-0 in their last match thanks to two goals from Sadio Mane but Lallana played a key role in what was his side’s first league win of 2017 after a dismal run of results in January, something Lawro was critical of.
