Sources: Gillingham open talks to sign Chambers after Ipswich development
Gillingham have opened talks with Ipswich Town captain Luke Chambers over a free transfer, Football Insider understands.
The centre-back, 35, is on the market after the League One club decided not to extend his contract, which expires next month.
A Gillingham source told Football Insider that they have swooped for the experienced defender and negotiations over a deal are underway.
He made 39 league starts among 41 appearances for Ipswich in the 2020-21 campaign.
Chambers has spent just shy of a decade in East Anglia and will be fondly remembered on the terraces at Portman Road.
In the early stages of the season, he climbed into the top-10 of all-time Ipswich appearance-makers.
His adoring public saw him turn out 396 times for the club in total, scoring 19 times and laying 18 assists.
Chambers has been the club's skipper since being handed the armband in 2014.
His Ipswich side endured a turbulent campaign in 2020-21, switching managers and undergoing a takeover.
The Tractor boys ultimately finished 9th in the third-tier, missing out on the play-offs by five points.
Gillingham finished in 10th place, two points behind Ipswich.
The Gills are hard at work in the transfer market and have engaged in talks with Chambers' ex-Ipswich teammate Alan Judge, who was let go by the club last month.
