Matt Ritchie ‘rewarded at Newcastle United’ as new role lined up – expert

Matt Ritchie could earn more minutes for Newcastle United after his last-minute equaliser against Bournemouth on Saturday (17 February).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton praised his ex-Scotland teammate as a “fantastic” asset to the Magpies’ squad.

The 34-year-old has made just one start across 12 total appearances in all competitions this season but bagged a crucial leveller just one minute after coming off the bench against the Cherries.

Newcastle’s recruitment under Saudi ownership has seen the veteran, who has made 210 appearances since his move in 2016, drop down the pecking order.

Matt Ritchie set for key Newcastle United role?

However, Hutton claimed that Ritchie could have a role to play for the remainder of the season amid the Magpies’ continuing injury issues.

“Fair play to Richie,” he told Football Insider.

“I know him well during my time with Scotland, but he’s probably not had the best of times in recent seasons.

“He’s not played the games he’s wanted to in recent years, but the one thing I know is that he’s a fantastic character.

“He gives 110 per cent in everything, whether that be in training, in games, gym sessions, pre-season – anything.

“He’s given everything for Newcastle and he’s got his reward – he might see more game time.

“He’s been more involved with their injury situation, but he’s been rewarded.”
