McAvennie can’t believe how Holyrood responded to Rangers reported request

Frank McAvennie can’t believe Holyrood’s decision not to allow Rangers fans into Ibrox last weekend.

The former Celtic hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists Gers fans should have been allowed to watch their team lift the Scottish Premiership trophy in the flesh.

The Daily Record claim Rangers asked the government if they could let 10,000 fans into Ibrox ahead of celebration day.

These plans were rejected, leaving thousands of Gers fans locked outside the ground before they made their way into Glasgow.

There were some unpleasant scenes later in the evening when a large group of fans gathered in George Square.

Rangers released a statement condemning the actions of a ‘minority’ of fans in the aftermath of last weekend’s celebrations.

McAvennie claims this could have been avoided if fans were let into Ibrox to celebrate, rather than being allowed to move into Glasgow.

“Why didn’t they keep them at Ibrox?” McAvennie suggested to Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Let them into Ibrox even. They could have celebrated with the players.

“I have no problem with the supporters celebrating. They have waited for such a long time.

“But the whole thing should have been handled so much better. All of this was inevitable.

“Why did the police let them walk into Glasgow? I knew all of this would happen three weeks ago, we all did.

“Just keep them at Ibrox. It makes so much sense, which is probably why it didn’t happen.”

On Saturday night, Police Scotland released a statement detailing how three of their officers had been injured while controlling the crowds.

It read, “So far we know that three officers have been injured and more than 20 people have been arrested.”
