McAvennie issues ‘wonderful’ Steven Davis verdict after Rangers teammate’s reveal

Frank McAvennie has claimed Steven Davis deserves more game time at Rangers this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Celtic striker heaped praise on the “wonderful” 37-year-old.

As quoted by Football Scotland (26 July), 20-year-old midfielder Charlie McCann said Davis is the “perfect example” of someone younger players should learn from.

The youngster said the midfielder is a “top player” with “all the experience in the world”.

Davis was an unused substitute in the Gers’ opening game of the season against Livingston.

The Northern Ireland international is into the final 12 months of his contract at Ibrox after signing an extension earlier this summer.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the decision not to play Davis against Livingston on Saturday, McAvennie said: “I think Davis is a wonderful talent, I would play him more.

I know he is getting on in age but he is still super fit.

There’s obviously a lot of players coming in. When you bring a lot of players in like Rangers have done recently, you’ve got to give them game time. Especially in the first couple of weeks of the season.

It will take a while for them to settle down so we’ll see how it goes.

Rangers

Davis made 33 appearances for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side across all competitions in the 2021-22 campaign.

In those outings he scored once and provided one assist.

In other news, a pundit has suggested Rangers could sanction a move for Glen Kamara on one condition after manager’s reveal.
