McBurnie reveals why he didn’t join Rangers in January after stunning revelation
Striker Oli McBurnie has stunningly revealed that he dreams of playing for Rangers one day, and that he only chose to go to Barnsley in January as he was told any Rangers interest was off.
McBurnie opted to join Championship Barnsley, where he’s been ripping up the league with six goals in nine league appearances.
However, talking in the Scottish Sun, McBurnie has said that he would love to play at Ibrox one day and addressed the January rumours.
He said that he would love to play for Rangers but that “nothing ever happens easily or simply for me”.
He also revealed that he was told on the afternoon of deadline day that nothing was happening with Rangers and that he had to pick another team.
“There were murmurs about Rangers in January but nothing ever happens easily or simply for me,” McBurnie said.
“I got told about 3pm on deadline day that nothing was going to happen and I had a certain amount of clubs to pick from.
“I ended up choosing Barnsley and it’s going well for me at the minute. Would I play for Rangers down the line? Of course.
“I grew up supporting them and one day I would love to pull on the jersey. We’ll just have to see how my career goes and see if I am lucky enough to pull it on.”
Football Insider verdict:
This is a fascinating interview that reveals why McBurnie didn’t end up at Rangers in January. It sounds like it was the move he wanted but that Rangers didn’t push for a deal. That makes sense, with both Jason Cummings and Alfredo Morelos at the club. And Rangers must have known at that point that they weren’t selling Morelos. This summer could be a very different proposition. Morelos might be off if the right offers come in, with Rangers hoping his price soars if he plays for Colombia at the World Cup. And this is about as clear a “come and get me” as you can get. It’s an interesting time to make such a clear statement of intent.
