McCalmont will be ‘devastated’ by confirmed Leeds transfer reveal – Whelan

Alfie McCalmont will be gutted to have been offered as a transfer makeweight by Leeds United, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted it would be “disheartening” for the 21-year-old to know the Whites are willing to let him go.

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, Peterborough United’s director of football Barry Fry revealed Leeds had offered McCalmont in a swap deal for an unnamed player.

The 21-year-old spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan with Oldham Athletic in League Two.

Whelan admitted he would be devastated if he was in McCalmont’s place.

However, he suggested it may be the motivation the young midfielder needs to kick on with his career.

“I think as a player, if I was out Alfie, I’d feel devastated,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“He’s done very well when he’s been out on loan this season. That will be very disheartening to the player.

“But depending on whether they’ve had talks and saying they’re going to need a different type of player and he will be used very sparsely, then on a player’s point of view again, you’ve got to feel that you need to kickstart your career.

“Sometimes it’s not at the respective club where you’ve been at for a number of years and come through the academy. Sometimes you have to break away and start your own future in football. Maybe it needs to be away from a very big club like Leeds.”

McCalmont scored 10 goals in 36 appearances during his loan spell at Oldham.

He has two first-team appearances under his belt for Leeds, both of which came in the League Cup.
