McLeish ‘amazed’ by Aston Villa source’s John McGinn update

Alex McLeish can’t believe Aston Villa are open to selling John McGinn this summer.

The former Villa boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the 27-year-old is still an integral part of Steven Gerrard’s squad.

A Villa source has told Football Insider (20 June) that the club will listen to offers this summer for McGinn and he is far from an untouchable despite being a nailed-on starter during his four years at the club.

The source explained that McGinn is not regarded as the easiest player to manage and the newly-appointed QPR manager Michael Beale was said to have had tense relationships with a number of senior Villa stars – McGinn among them – last season.

Despite these updates, McLeish can’t believe the club are open to letting the midfielder leave considering his importance to the side.

“I’m quite amazed, I don’t believe that,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“McGinn is still an integral part of the rise of Aston Villa. The fans love him as well. He has done a fantastic job for club and country.

“I just can’t believe it if that is what Steven [Gerrard] has said and actually thinks about McGinn.”

McGinn started 35 of Aston Villa’s 38 Premier League games in the 2021-22 season as they finished 14th.

The Glasgow-born ace moved to the club from Hibs in the summer of 2018 and has made 147 appearances across all competitions.

In other news, Aston Villa are in advanced talks to sign a player after a record offer.
