McLeish names next Rangers signing after Champions League blow – ‘there is no doubt’

Rangers must focus on signing a backup striker to ease the burden on Alfredo Morelos.

That’s according to ex-Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about his side’s lack of firepower.

Rangers lost 2-0 to USG on Tuesday (2 August), meaning they must overturn a two-goal deficit if they are to progress to the next Champions League qualifying round.

Morelos is yet to return to the matchday squad since getting injured in the final weeks of the 2021-22 season.

The Gers’ two goals against Livingston on Saturday (30 July) came from defender James Tavernier and veteran midfielder Scott Arfield.

McLeish insists Rangers must address their reliance on Morelos.

“There is no doubt, for too long, Morelos has been the main talisman,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“He’s the one they look to, to score in those big games. We have seen him do it on so many occasions.

“Kent was a big miss on the night as well [v USG], he can change a game. But there was nothing in attack.

“They need to get back up for Morelos so they don’t have to rely on him through every campaign. That is what needs to happen.”

Rangers

Summer striker signing Antonio Colak is yet to break his Rangers duck despite bagging two goals in pre-season.

Rangers face Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Saturday (6 August) before the second leg of their Champions League playoff tie v USG.
