Medical passed: Leeds to complete third summer signing on Friday – report
By Danny Wright
Goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald is set to complete his move to Leeds on Friday after passing a medical with the Yorkshire club, according to a report.
The Yorkshire Post claims that the 27-year-old will secure a move from Werder Bremen to the Championship in a deal worth £500,000 which would make him Thomas Christiansen’s third signing of the summer following completed transfers for Mateusz Klich and Madger Gomes.
It is understood that Wiedwald’s arrival at Elland Road means that one of Christiansen’s current ‘keepers is likely to face the axe this summer.
Rob Green was Garry Monk’s No 1 choice between the sticks for most of last season, while Marco Silvestri and academy product Bailey Peacock-Farrell also provide back-up.
All three of the current United goalkeepers are about to enter the final year of their contracts.
Wiedwald played a key part in helping Werder Bremen finish eighth in the German Bundesliga last season.
He made 26 appearances across all competitions, keeping five clean sheets but according to the Yorkshire Evening Post he is now facing the exit after Bremen confirmed that they are close to signing Slavia Prague shot-stopper Jiri Pavlenka.
Football Insider Verdict
Wiedwald looks like he will be a very good addition to Christiansen’s squad ahead of next season as Leeds look to push on towards promotion to the Premier League. The 27-year-old is now at the peak of his career and could easily compete with the aging Green for a starting berth in the Whites squad. This now means that Silvestri’s time at Elland Road is probably over and Leeds should really look to move him on to try and make back some of the money. Christiansen needs to add a couple more new players to his team, especially in defence. So don’t expect this to be the Whites’ final forray into the transfer market this summer.
