Michael Owen admits surprise in Newcastle v Southampton prediction
By Russell Edge
Former Newcastle United striker Michael Owen has admitted he is surprised that Southampton have been named as firm favourites for their clash against the Magpies.
Rafael Benitez’s side go into Sunday’s clash on the back of an impressive 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool, as they frustrated an impressive attacking line up consisting of Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Mohamed Salah.
The Saints meanwhile have suffered two successive defeats to both Manchester United and Stoke, with the Potters’ Peter Crouch snatching a late goal to secure a 2-1 win in the north west.
Newcastle current sit ninth in the league table, with Southampton two points behind in 12th, but despite both form and position going against them, Bet Victor have named the Saints as firm favourites at a price of 4/5.
Owen has admitted he is surprised by the favourable odds offered on the Saints, highlighting the impressive defensive performance Newcastle put in against Liverpool compared with Southampton’s lack of goals.
Predicting a 1-1 draw between the two sides for Bet Victor, Owen said: “Southampton have failed to score in eight of their last nine PL games at St Mary’s.
“I am surprised they are such short-priced favourites against a Newcastle side who looked well organised and disciplined when getting a point at home to Liverpool last time.”
Southampton have scored five goals this season, with Newcastle having netted seven, while the Magpies have the joint fifth best defensive record in the league with just six goals conceded, level with Chelsea.
