Michael Owen: This is what will happen to Klopp if Liverpool miss out on Champions League
By Amir Mir
Michael Owen believes Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will still be backed even if his side misses out on a Champions League place at the end of the season.
The former Premier League winner believes there will not be a “huge outcry” from supporters because they remain “positive” towards Klopp and his players.
At this moment in time, they are sitting third in the Premier League table, five points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United, who have a game in hand on their rivals.
Jose Mourinho’s side can still enter the Champions League for next season even if they miss out on a top-four place because they are still in with a chance of winning the Europa League.
Nonetheless, Owen, who represented both United and Liverpool during his playing days, stated what will happen to Klopp if he misses out on a Champions League place.
“The whole club from the boardroom to the fans have bought into Jurgen Klopp and no matter what happens, you have to give someone time to work if you put your faith in them,” Owen told Yahoo Sport.
“No matter what happens in these final four games of the season, I don’t think there will be a huge outcry against the manager.
“There have been some disappointments this season, but there general feeling remains very positive towards Klopp and his players.
“I don’t see that changing in the coming weeks, but there will be pressure on next season if things don’t work out and Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League.”
There have been a mixed bag of results for Monk this season, with side picking up wins against those in the top six but losing to the so-called lesser sides.
The likes of Burnley, Swansea and Crystal Palace have all beaten the Merseyside club during this campaign.
On the other hand, they have recorded wins against the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea.
The Reds will now prepare for a trip to Slaven Bilic’s West Ham on Sunday afternoon, with the London club coming off a win against rivals Tottenham.
In other Liverpool news, James Milner has stated what he will do if the club misses out on a Champions League place.
