‘Might be like Zidane’ – Rangers legend makes huge claim about Gerrard appointment

Rangers legend Alex Miller thinks Steven Gerrard could turn out to be like Zinedine Zidane as a manager when he takes his first steps in management with the Gers – and insists the Liverpool icon will lead by example at Ibrox.

Miller knows Gerrard well after working closely with the former Liverpool midfielder during his time at Anfield and thinks the 37-year-old’s teams will be “organised” and give 100% in every game.

After seeing Zidane make the transition from world-class player to highly-successful manager, Miller thinks Gerrard might turn out the same but admits “no one knows” what he will be like in the hotseat.

“Obviously, people know he could play. He might be a bit like Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid, he could play but no-one knows what he would be like as a coach,” Miller said, as quoted by the Edinburgh Evening News.

“It’s the same with Steven but the one thing is his teams will be organised and he’ll make sure they give 100 per cent. He’s a confident guy but also quite humble. He wasn’t a guy to do a lot of shouting, as a captain he was quite quiet, but he led by example.”

Football Insider verdict:

Miller knows first-hand the qualities Gerrard has and is as well-placed as anyone to say what he will bring to Ibrox when he takes charge next week. If Gerrard handles the transition as well as Zidane has then things are about to change at Ibrox and Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers could be in some trouble. Having Gary McAllister beside him as his assistant should be a big help for Gerrard as he takes his first steps in management and gives him an experienced head to bounce ideas off and get advice. Gerrard certainly has the personality and attributes to be a success in Glasgow but a lot will also depend on him being properly supported by the board when it comes to bringing in players over the summer. With the Gers’ getting their season underway on July 12th, Gerrard doesn’t have a huge amount of time to get settled and get to work.
