Miguel Almiron: Significant update on Newcastle exit today – Transfer guru
Newcastle United would like to sell Miguel Almiron in the January transfer window, but have been frustrated by the lack of concrete interest.
This is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the Magpies have been looking to sell the 30-year-old “for some time”.
That would then allow them to reinvest money into Eddie Howe’s squad as there is a feeling that further additions would greatly improve their chances of European qualification.
The club have been restricted in the transfer window by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, making any big-money signings unlikely unless they can sell first.
As a result, Football Insider revealed in December that Newcastle would not stand in the winger’s way should a suitable offer arrive and expect him to leave in January.
Brown has echoed that as he revealed the Magpies saw Almiron as “somebody who could make them decent money” should he be moved on.
However, despite an initial interest from clubs in the Premier League and MLS outfit Charlotte FC, none have been prepared to make a move.
Newcastle United frustrated after Miguel Almiron transfer twist
Now, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has revealed that those demands may still be impacting his potential departure.
“They would like to sell Almiron this month if they can,” he told Football Insider.
“From what I’m told, they’ve been open to offers for him for some time.
“I think the problem is, they haven’t had any takers for him.
“They want to get rid of him, as a fringe player, to generate funds and bring somebody else in.
“Bringing some quality to the club at this stage of the season could be exactly what they need to kick on and make sure they qualify for Europe, because that’s their aim.
“But sometimes things like that don’t go to plan because you don’t have control over other clubs.

“There isn’t any interest in Almiron at the moment, whether that’s because of his wages, Newcastle’s asking price, or just that clubs don’t view him as a top target.
“That’s the frustrating thing for Newcastle because they saw him as somebody who could potentially make them some decent money.“
In other news, Newcastle have reignited their interest in signing Fikayo Tomori.
