Mills: Bielsa told to look at Wilkinson as ‘massive’ Leeds issue emerges

Danny Mills has criticised the Leeds United defence as they conceded yet another goal from a set-piece against Fulham on Friday night.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Whites and England full-back insisted it is a “huge problem” and there is little excuse for conceding “needless goals”.

Joachim Anderson finished from a corner at Craven Cottage on Friday night as Leeds conceded their 15th set-piece goal of the season.

The Yorkshire giants have conceded the most goals from dead-ball situations in the Premier League this season, according to WhoScored.

“It’s massive, it’s a huge problem,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They’ve conceded from so many set pieces. They’re needless goals. They’re not worldy free-kicks, just corners that are crosses into the box. That’s just somebody not doing their job. That’s a little bit of a concern.

“I’ve worked with some fantastic coaches – Howard Wilkinson was unreal with the way we used to set up time and time again.

“If you were to concede from a set-piece it had to be perfect from the opposition.

“It’s very easy to stop a player from scoring from a cross. It’s not like you’re out of position and running back, you are set so all you’ve got to do is attack the ball and stop your opposite number from getting there before you do. It shouldn’t be, in theory, that difficult.”

Leeds United players huddle

The 15 goals Leeds have conceded from set-pieces this season represents 31.9 per cent of their total conceded in the Premier League.

The Whites have only let in 21 goals from open play which ranks 11th in the top-flight.

In other news, Leeds United are willing to listen to offers for a big-money 2020 signing as their transfer plan is revealed.
