Mills tells Leeds star to ‘pipe down’ as he rips into Meslier’s agent ‘stirring things up’
Danny Mills has told Illan Meslier’s agent to “pipe down” and let the Leeds United goalkeeper’s football do the talking.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender suggested the club will be relaying the same message to Xavier Fleury after his latest comments to the LUFC Fan Zone podcast.
Fleury insisted there were some “top clubs” taking an interest in the young stopper after he became the first goalkeeper to keep eight Premier League clean sheets before their 21st birthday.
This site understands West Ham are keeping tabs on the Frenchman as a potential replacement for Lukasz Fabianski who is out of contract in the summer.
“His agent is just stirring things up saying ‘I want a better deal because there are other people sniffing around’,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“You know what? Agents should just pipe down.
“We’ve all been there, we’ve all done it. I’ve done it myself. All of sudden a story emerges in one of the newspapers saying ‘such and such are going to offer this amount a week and another club is interested.’
“It’s always with the idea of getting higher wages of where you’re at.
“He’s got a lot of potential but he’s still a young goalkeeper. He’s still in his first season in the Premier League. He’s been good but he’s not been off the scale.
“If I was Leeds United I’d put in a little phone call into his agent and say ‘Do yourself a favour, mate. Pipe down, you don’t need to be doing that. Let your player do the talking. He’s a good goalkeeper, we’re going to offer him a new deal and if he keeps improving we’ll offer him a new deal after that.’
“Agents don’t do themselves favours because he’s putting unnecessary pressure on the player.
“If he has a bad game people will say ‘He’s not focused, he wants away.’ And that possibly couldn’t be further from the truth.
“I think that’s the agent just stirring things up to get the player a better deal and himself a better deal.”
