Firpo backed to deal with Bielsa’s intensity after Leeds deal completed – Mills

Danny Mills has backed Junior Firpo to fit seamlessly into the Leeds United starting XI.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender insisted the left-back is a signing that should excite the Elland Road faithful.

Leeds confirmed the arrival of Firpo from Barcelona on a four-year deal last week.

Football Insider learned on 29 June the Yorkshire giants had a bid worth £12.8million accepted by Barcelona.

The 24-year-old played 41 games across all competitions for the Spanish giants over the last two seasons.

He will replace the outgoing Ezgjan Alioski who the club confirmed last week will not be signing a new contract.

Firpo has been handed the number three shirt by Marcelo Bielsa and Mills has backed him to thrive under the Argentine.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think it is exciting for Leeds fans.

“He’s obviously a player of quality and now he has to fit into Marcelo Bielsa’s system and get used to the high-intensity training regime that they have and go from there.

“He’s a player who you’d expect to come in and be comfortable on the ball. He should be able to handle the way Leeds play.”

Firpo, a former Spain Under-21 international, can operate at left-back and left-midfield.

He only started three La Liga games for Barca last term but played a key role as they won the Copa del Ray.

The versatile ace scored seven times and provided nine assists in 62 La Liga games for Barcelona and Real Betis.
