Mills questions if ‘big money’ Leeds target is ‘better than Bamford’ as move plotted for eight-goal star
Danny Mills has claimed John Swift would not improve the Leeds United squad.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender insisted Swift would not be worth the “big money” it would take to get him out of Reading during the January transfer window.
Football Insider first revealed in April 2019 the Yorkshire giants have an interest in the 26-year-old midfielder.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider the club are considering a move for Swift ahead of January while he has also been linked with Wolves and Burnley.
The Englishman has scored eight times and provided seven assists for Reading in the Championship this season.
He is out of contract at the Madjeski Stadium at the end of the current campaign.
And Mills has suggested they will not want to cash in during the winter window.
He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Are Reading going to want to sell? They’re going to think they need every player possible to get out of the situation they are in.
“Also, is he better than what Leeds have got? Is he better than Bamford, who we expect to come back to fitness soon? Is he better than Rodrigo? There are doubts.
“Will he be able to do it immediately in the Premier League? We know it takes them months to get up to speed under Bielsa so you’d be looking at the end of January if you buy him at the beginning.

“January transfers are not really something I expect Marcelo Bielsa to do too much. When he’s done it in the past, even with loan deals, it hasn’t really worked out.
“Reading are going to want big money as well. You’re looking at big money for a squad player. Is that really worth it? I’m not convinced it would be.”
