Mills shares verdict on Leeds signing ‘next Bamford’ after newspaper reveal
Danny Mills has insisted Leeds United would be taking a “gamble” by signing Michy Batshuayi.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender compared the striker to Patrick Bamford in that he would be a “hopeful” signing rather than a guaranteed success.
The Telegraph reported on June 2 Leeds are interested in signing the Belgium international as Chelsea look to cash in.
Batshuayi signed a one-year extension with Chelsea last summer before heading to Crystal Palace on loan and therefore his current deal expires in 2022.
The Belgium international previously worked with Marcelo Bielsa at Marseille during the 2014-15 campaing.
Asked whether he would be a good signing for Leeds, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I just look at that and think ‘Is that another Bamford?’
“In all honesty, you’ll be hoping he comes good rather than knowing that he’s going to be good.
“He can clearly score goals but his form has been incredibly sporadic in the past few seasons.
“It’s a little bit like Patrick Bamford was. He’s missing a lot of chances and people are going ‘How’s he missed that?’ Batshuayi is like that. He was almost blocking things off the line.
“When I look at Batshuayi I think ‘It’s a hopeful signing and a bit of a gamble.’ Rather than looking at somebody who can be a guarantee.”
Bamford is one player who has come good for Leeds after he netted 17 Premier League goals in their first top-flight season in 16 years.
Harry Kane was the only Englishman who found the net more often in the division.
In other news, Leeds United have been offered an Arsenal rising star and £20million will seal the deal.
