Exclusive: Assist king Bielsa has tried to lure to Leeds wanted by trio after big development

Marcus Maddison is wanted by three MLS clubs this summer after repeated attempts to lure him to Leeds United, Football Insider can reveal.

The assist king and free-scoring playmaker, 26, is available on a free transfer from next month as he finally gets the exit from Peterborough United he has previously been denied.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Real Salt Lake, Philadelphia Union and Los Angeles FC are interested in Maddison.

He will be available from 1 July after opting against featuring for loan club Hull City in the remaining nine matches of their Championship campaign.

Maddison moved to the east Yorkshire club in January but will leave following just seven first-team appearances.

It will mean no transfer for Peterborough, who accepted bids from Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic for the attacking midfielder in the winter window.

However, Maddison could not agree personal terms and he instead moved temporarily to Hull.

Leeds tried to prise Maddison from Peterborough in the summer of 2018, shortly after Bielsa took over as manager, but were not willing to match the asking price.

The Yorkshire giants have been long-term admirers of the playmaker and came close to signing him in January 2016 only for the move to fall through.

The former Newcastle United man has long been regarded as one of the best attacking players in the Football League and had an outstanding record of creating and scoring goals for Peterborough.

In 249 appearances for the third-tier club, Maddison scored 62 goals and registered a remarkable 92 assists, the highest tally in England over the last four years.

In other Leeds United news, Danny Mills has claimed his former club are “in the box seat” to sign Ben White permanently after update.
