Mo Johnston: This Rangers senior man should follow Warburton out of the club

Rangers icon Mo Johnston believes chairman Dave King should be the next senior figure to quit Ibrox.

The Scottish club have made a number of changes to the backroom team since the new year, including a change of management which saw Pedro Caixinha replace Mark Warburton in the Ibrox dugout.

Warburton’s two associates, recruitment guru Frank McParland and assistant coach David Weir, were also dismissed from their posts, but Johnston hinted that King should be the next to leave the club.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun, he urged the Rangers board to give new boss Caixinha sufficient financial backing to close the gap on runaway leaders Celtic, but conceded that King might not be willing to do that.

He said: “If Rangers are going to have any chance of challenging Celtic, they have to spend money. I know it’s not there right now but that’s what they need.

“Maybe Rangers need a different owner. I don’t know much about King’s finances but if he puts more money in then things might improve.

“But I don’t think he’s going to do that and if that’s the case they’d need someone else to come in and invest their money.”

The gap between Rangers and Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this season currently stands at an incredible 33 points, with the Hoops also winning three of the four meetings in the Old Firm this term.

Rangers returned to the Scottish top flight at the start of the season following a four-year exile, leaving Celtic completely unchallenged in the hunt domestic glory.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are closing in on their sixth consecutive league title, but Rangers can still throw a spanner in the works in their pursuit of treble glory.

The two rivals are to go head-to-head for a fifth time this season in the Scottish Cup semi final on April 23.

However, the more immediate future sees Caixinha take charge at Ibrox for the first time when they host Hamilton on Saturday.

In other Rangers news, Alex Rae has urged the club to pursue these two signings in the summer.
