Graeme Murty: This is what I told Rangers players during win over Motherwell
Rangers manager Graeme Murty has revealed what he told his side at half-time of their 2-0 win over Motherwell at Ibrox on Wednesday night in the Scottish Premiership- and admitted his side got too caught up in trying to match Motherwell physically.
After going in at half-time with the score level at 0-0, Murty implored his side to use the ball more and pull gaps in Motherwell’s shape.
Second-half goals from Danny Wilson and Alfredo Morelos sealed the three points for the Ibrox giants in a fairly comfortable win over Stephen Robinson’s side.
Murty also revealed that he was happy with his side’s overall performance as they picked up their first win in three games.
“I thought that we started really well and I thought that we moved the ball really quickly,” Murty said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
“Then we started to play their game a bit too much and were a bit too direct; making it about the physical stuff, rather the technical stuff.
“I said to the players at half time that they needed to be a bit braver on the ball. If a man is there and is tight, then still give them the ball as we need to shift them around.
“I thought that we did that a lot better in the second half. Taking chances and scoring goals makes a massive difference to the confidence of the team.”
The result is the ideal preparation for Murty’s side ahead of Saturday’s Old Firm clash at Celtic Park.
Despite not being at their best, the Gers were comfortable throughout against the Steelmen and thoroughly deserved their win.
Murty’s much-changed side dealt with everything Motherwell threw at them and could have won by a bigger margin but for a number of impressive stops by Well keeper Trevor Carson.
The win closes the gap to leaders Celtic to 11 points at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
