New Leeds winger already more than twice as good as Doukara – report
By Alex Stevens
New Leeds winger Alfonso Pedraza already looks more than twice as good as incumbent Souleymane Doukara, according to a report.
The Yorkshire Evening Post ran the rule over the deadline day signing after he made his first appearance for Garry Monk’s side in their 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield on Sunday.
Pedraza was introduced from the bench at the 62-minute mark of the fiercely-contested derby, when he came on for Doukara, who made little impact at the John Smith’s Stadium.
The Spanish left winger, 20, could not turn the match in Leeds’ favour but showed some encouraging signs with his ability to carry the ball forward down the flank.
“Enough in this cameo to suggest that Leeds have a player,” noted the Yorkshire Evening Post. “Came close to a goal and produced a couple of clever, jinking runs.”
The newspaper was less enthused by the performance of Doukara, who has been a regular in the starting XI during the team’s impressive run of results over the last few months.
“No serious attacking threat from him and his defensive work wasn’t great either,” it reported. “Pedraza looked like twice the winger, if not more.”
Pedraza joined Leeds last Tuesday initially on loan form La Liga club Villarreal for the remainder of the season.
However, it has been widely reported in Spain that the emerging star will move to Leeds permanently for a fee of £8.5million if they earn promotion to the Premier League this season.
Monk’s side are still on course to reach the play-offs despite the defeat to Huddersfield on Sunday, which means they slip one position in the table to fifth.
Leeds are eight points clear of Norwich in seventh position and have a chance to pull back the top four when they host Cardiff at Elland Road on Saturday.
In other Leeds news, fans have reacted hilariously to Gaetano Berardi’s role in the late brawl against Huddersfield.
