Newcastle 20-year-old wants move to top-flight club – report

By Derek Smithson

Newcastle youngster Freddie Woodman wants to join Kilmarnock on loan next season, according to a report.

The Daily Record claim that the 20-year-old is keen on re-joining the Scottish club over the summer following his loan spell there last season.

It is understood that the goalkeeper is waiting on the Magpies to make a decision on his future, but he is expected to be loaned out once again for more first-team experience.

Woodman is unlikely to force his way into contention at St James’ Park next season following Newcastle’s return to the Premier League and will want to continue his development.

The young shot stopper loaned Kilmarnock last season in January and impressed during this 15 appearances for the Scottish top-flight club.

He kept four clean sheets in that time and is being tipped for a bright future in the game

Woodman has recently helped England’s Under-20s win the World Cup and saved a penalty in the 1-0 victory over Venezuela in the final.

The goalkeeper was one of the stars for his nation throughout the tournament and Newcastle fans were drawn to the qualities of their emerging talent.

Football Insider verdict:

Woodman is yet to make a senior appearance for Newcastle, but there is a real belief that he can go on to become a future star. His displays for the national side proved he is one of the best upcoming talents in England and another loan spell is the perfect plan. The 20-year-old still has so much time to develop as a goalkeeper and the best way is by experiencing regular football. Woodman enjoyed his spell in Scotland last season and can test himself against the likes of Celtic, Aberdeen and Rangers if he moves back to Kilmarnock. Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez already have too many goalkeeping options in his squad and needs a summer clear out, but Woodman should be closely monitored during time away from St James’ Park as he has a bright future.
