Newcastle and Tottenham ‘locked in Alexander Sorloth battle’ amid transfer woes

Newcastle United and Tottenham have both set their sights on Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth.

After losing Callum Wilson on a free transfer to West Ham amid Liverpool’s interest in Alexander Isak, the North East club need to sign a new striker.

Meanwhile, new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is keen to continue strengthening his forward line as he looks to enjoy success in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Spurs have been rocked by the news that transfer target Eberechi Eze is set to join rivals Arsenal after excelling at Crystal Palace.

Alexander Sorloth attracts transfer interest from Newcastle and Tottenham

Amid the Magpies’ search for a new striker, Football Insider have exclusively revealed that Brentford will accept £50million for Newcastle target Yoane Wissa.

Wissa performed well for the Bees last term, notching 19 goals in 35 Premier League appearances in West London under Frank.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT reported on Friday, 22 August, that Sorloth is on the radar of Newcastle and Tottenham as the Premier League duo look to finalise their summer transfer business.

Alexander Sorloth would be a strong asset for either Eddie Howe or Thomas Frank

The Isak transfer saga has damaged Newcastle, who now face the prospect of either losing the Sweden star to Liverpool or seeing him remain unwilling to play for the North East side.

Acquiring Wissa would go some way to filling the goal-scoring void left by Isak’s potential departure, as the Brentford man could become even better playing alongside stars like Anthony Gordon.

However, after previously facilitating Wilson’s exit, Newcastle need to sign more than just Wissa, hence their interest in Sorloth.

Sorloth previously struggled in the Premier League with Crystal Palace, notching just one goal in 20 appearances for the Eagles between 2018 and 2019.

The striker has subsequently established much stronger form for Atletico Madrid, though, scoring 24 goals in 50 outings across all competitions last term.

Sorloth’s exploits in the Spanish capital also suggest that he would be a strong option for Spurs, although a move to North London could hinge on whether Richarlison leaves.

Meanwhile, Spurs expert John Wenham weighed in on whether the Eze transfer saga has weakened Frank’s side’s relationship with Crystal Palace in a Tottenham News exclusive.
