‘Newcastle are set to sign superstars’ after source’s ‘big’ transfer reveal – pundit

Amadou Onana would be a “big” signing for Newcastle United and will take them to the “next level”

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham United and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed he was not shocked to see that Newcastle were interested in a move for the highly-rated Everton midfielder.

As revealed by Football Insider (5 February), Eddie Howe’s side are very keen to sign Onana in the summer and have complied an extensive scouting dossier on the Belgium international.

Onana has been a star man for the struggling Toffees this season and has amassed interest from across the Premier League, including title chasers Arsenal.

McAvennie insisted that the Magpies need to sign top players so they can consistently challenge for European football and suggested Onana would be the ideal recruit to fulfil this ambition.

“I think Newcastle need big players,” he told Football Insider.

“Onana is a step up from many of their midfielders and he’s shining in a team like Everton that have been fighting for everything this year.

“When you have a player who stands out like Onana does, you know you have quality.

“I’m not surprised that Newcastle are interested at all.

“There will be superstar players coming in at Newcastle, whether it be this year or next year.

“At some point, they will sign these brilliant players to take them to the next level and I think the Onana boy could be one of them.”
