Newcastle fans expect to win the league after huge PIF update – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness believes that Newcastle United fans expect to win the Premier League due to the club’s progress under their Saudi owners and the latest news of their ambitious stadium plans.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claims that PIF have done a “great job” since taking over the club.

PIF owns an 85% stake in the north east giants after their £300million deal with Mike Ashley to take charge of the Premier League outfit.

Newcastle have climbed up the Premier League table since that point and managed to qualify for the Champions League during the 2022-23 campaign.

However, Wyness believes that the Toon Army now have sights set on much loftier achievements.

Newcastle United supporters believe they can win the Premier League

Wyness told Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “It’s fantastic progress, I’ve got to give them full marks they’ve done a great job.

“If it hadn’t been for some of the injuries last season Newcastle may have finished back up the table again.

“The spirit in the north east now, to qualify for the Champions League and their performances within the Champions League, the expectation now are at a completely different level.

“Seeing the Newcastle fans at Everton at the weekend, they’re expecting to win every game now, they’re expecting to win the league and that’s a complete reset of the expectations from the Mike Ashley era.

“So, PIF have done a great job and here we are just discussing a potential new stadium plan, a new training ground.

“All of these things are signs for the future, and they’ve given the fans hope, they’ve reignited the passion up in the north east, which I don’t think was ever dying, but certainly was reignited, so I give PIF full marks for this.

“They’ve been patient, they didn’t jump into it and just throw money at it so I think they’ve done a great job.

“It’s been better than expected.”
