Newcastle fans fume at ‘hypocritical’ Alan Shearer after controversial twist

Newcastle United fans were angry with club legend Alan Shearer after he claimed the team should not have been awarded a penalty against Man City.

The Magpies earned a point against the defending Premier League champions on Saturday (28 September) after Anthony Gordon’s equaliser from the penalty spot in the 58th minute.

The England international himself was deemed fouled by Ederson, which led to the penalty, but not everyone agreed with the decision.

Man City fans were furious with the on-field call, and despite his allegiances to Newcastle, Shearer agreed with them, as he explained on Premier League Productions on 28 September.

Newcastle’s all-time top goalscorer made it clear he did not think it was a penalty, which led to some angry responses from the Toon Army.

Gordon was able to convert the penalty to gain another point for his team, leading to Newcastle finishing the weekend in seventh place.

Newcastle fans label Alan Shearer a hypocrite

Supporters felt that Shearer was simply “trying too hard” not to showcase any bias, while others claimed he would be a “shocking” referee.

Don’t often disagree with @alanshearer but he’s wrong about Gordon decision. A penalty for me, there is contact, goalkeeper doesn’t get ball. Yes Gordon makes sure there is contact but that’s what strikers – including Alan, Lineker, Owen, Kane etc – have been doing for years…

Heard your reasoning after the game… In what world is Gordon not scoring from that position? He's only sent is as wide as the near post? The goal is still open he just has to not hit the defender on the far post. Definitely a pen despite minimal contact.
