Eddie Howe’s side ran out 1-0 winners from an ill-tempered affair at St James’ Park which was marred by the controversy surrounding Fabian Schar’s red card.
Following the sending-off, a series of heavy challenges and fouls took place, with a focus on the Southampton forward in retaliation for his exaggerated reaction to Schar’s touch.
Both the crowd and the players at St James’ appeared to target Brereton Diaz, and a clip of a strong tackle from Longstaff quickly did the rounds on social media.

The official Newcastle X account shared the video as fans flocked to social media to laud their admiration for the midfielder and his impact on the game.
Longstaff was described as “heroic” and “massive” as fans celebrated his tackle.
