Newcastle fans react on Twitter to Daryl Murphy display in Ireland win v Moldova
By Danny Wright
Newcastle United fans have raved about Daryl Murphy on Twitter after he scored two goals in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-0 win against Moldova on Friday night.
Ireland kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia next summer by earning themselves three points, courtesy of Murphy’s first-half brace.
The 34-year-old left Newcastle in the summer to sign for Nottingham Forest after spending just one season at St. James’ Park, but he has clearly won over the hearts of the Toon Army despite having such a short stint on Tyneside.
Most fans are now saying that they would prefer him back in the black and white stripes over the likes of summer signing Joselu.
Here is a selection of their tweets:
Murphy made just 18 appearances for the Magpies last term, scoring six goals in the process as he helped them to win the Championship title.
He did a stellar job when called upon to replace Dwight Gayle and the out-of-form Aleksandar Mitrovic, and that appears to have been what has seen the Newcastle fans become so attached to him.
Now at Nottingham Forest, Murphy has continued to be a regular supply of goals, finding the net six times in 11 Championship fixtures – a figure that is only bettered by three other players in the division.
In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies have agreed terms with this defender.
