Newcastle fans react on Twitter to latest Shelvey red mist moment

By Will Butcher

Newcastle fans have expressed their disappointment on Twitter at Jonjo Shelvey after he was sent off against Nottingham Forest in Friday’s Championship showdown.

The 24-year-old received his marching orders in the first half after kicking out at Forest’s in-form star Henri Lansbury, following an altercation that occurred off the ball.

It resulted in a spot-kick that was saved from Nicklas Bendtner by Karl Darlow, who kept out two penalties in a remarkable first half at the City Ground that ended with nine-man Newcastle 1-0 ahead.

The red card is another blot against the name of Shelvey, who has been in outstanding form but has a growing reputation for having a short fuse.

He currently awaits a date for his personal hearing charge after being accused of a racist attack on Wolves midfielder Romain Saiss.

The England international is set to feature for the next three games after the Forest fixture, after pleading not guilty to the charge.

Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter to their star midfielder’s red card, with many frustrated by his temperament as the amount of games that Shelvey faces on the sidelines could rise.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

The red card is the third of Shelvey’s career, after he was sent off for Liverpool against Manchester United for a two-footed tackle on Jonny Evans as well as being sent off for Swansea.

Shelvey already has four yellow cards this season and is one away from picking up an automatic one-match ban, on top of his FA hearing and a three-match ban which will be administered for his lunge on Lansbury.

In other Newcastle news, Matt Ritchie has made this honest verdict to his own form on Twitter.
