‘Horrific’, ‘Howler’ – Newcastle fans slam one player despite win v Huddersfield
Newcastle United fans have slammed Dwight Gayle for his performance in the 1-0 win against Huddersfield at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
Gayle, 27, squandered several chances to put the Magpies ahead in the first-half before he was eventually substituted off by Rafa Benitez and replaced by debutant Islam Slimani.
Five minutes later, Newcastle scored the winning goal thanks to Ayoze Perez slotting away a clever ball into him by Kenedy.
Gayle has been ever-present for the Magpies this season and has made 30 appearances in all competitions.
However the former Crystal Palace forward has only managed to find the net five times and failed to add to that tally against struggling Huddersfield.
Although United moved away from the relegation zone and have pretty much allayed any fears of an instant relegation, there was still a lot of criticism aimed at Gayle for his inept show in front of goal.
One angry member of the Toon Army claimed his finishing was “horrific”.
Here is a selection of their tweets:
Benitez may be forced to keep Gayle in his starting line-up next week when they face Leicester at the King Power.
Slimani was impressive in his debut and fans were left raving about him, but will be ineligible to play against his parent club, so the Algeria international will have to wait at least two weeks for his next appearance.
In other Newcastle United news, this Magpies 22-year-old is in the form of his life but Benitez has to bin him in the summer after an outburst was aimed at the club.
