‘Could be great’ – Newcastle fans react on Twitter after latest transfer announcement
By Russell Edge
Newcastle fans have been left divided on social media after the club announced the arrival of defender Javier Manquillo.
The Magpies confirmed on Friday that they had captured the 23-year-old on a three-year deal from La Liga side Atletico Madrid via their official Twitter account.
Versatile full-back Manquillo, who spent last season on loan at Newcastle’s fierce rivals Sunderland, has 30 Premier League games under his belts following temporary spells at both the Black Cats and Liverpool.
However, despite his top flight experience, not every member of the Toon Army was thrilled to have secured the defender’s signings, with fans taking to Twitter to voice their feelings.
Here, Football Insider has rounded up a selection of their tweets:
Manquillo becomes the fourth arrival of the summer for Rafael Benitez and the Magpies, following Christian Atsu, Florian Lejeune and Jacob Murphy through the door at St James’ Park.
Able to play at both right and left-back, his arrival will put pressure on the likes of DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett, who both established themselves as first choice players last season in the Championship.
While the Magpies stormed to the second tier title, Manquillo was unable to stop Sunderland from suffering the ignominy of relegation, making 22 appearances across all competitions.
However, unlike the Black Cats, he has secured a place in the top flight, making the short hop across the North East as the two clubs swap leagues.
In other Newcastle news, the Magpies have joined a Championship race for a Premier League winger.
