Newcastle fans will rave over the memories in five greatest matches v Sunderland

Newcastle 5 – 1 Sunderland – 31/10/2010

It was befitting this clash took place on Halloween, for the Sunderland players endured a nightmare at St James’ Park, orchestrated by the Magpies’ captain Kevin Nolan.

Everything that could have gone wrong for the visitors, did, and it started just before the half hour mark, Nolan scoring a bizarre looking overhead kick from off the ground to give Newcastle the lead.

Eight minutes later he has his second, poking home from close range, and a third came on the brink of half time, Shola Ameobi netting from the penalty spot.

A red card for former Newcastle man Titus Bramble meant Sunderland were further up against it for most of the second half, and the Magpies took full advantage, Ameobi netting again with a sublime volley before Nolan grabbed his hat trick with a close range header.

Darren Bent’s consolation was nothing to cheer for the Sunderland fans, and it did nothing to dampen the joyous spirits of Newcastle, with a game which will long live in the memory.
