Newcastle have a rising star who is ‘as good as Alexander Isak’ – expert
Anthony Gordon can have the same impact as Alexander Isak at Newcastle United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham United and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie hailed Gordon, 23, for his “excellent” form and attitude since his move to the Magpies.
The attacker has been a quality addition to Eddie Howe’s side since his reported £45million switch from Everton in January 2023, having bagged 11 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this term.
However, Newcastle’s most prolific star is Alexander Isak, who stayed in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot on Saturday (27 April) in their 5-1 thrashing on Sheffield United.

His brace against the Blades brought his league haul up to 19 and his overall tally up to 23 – firmly the club’s top scorer ahead of second-place Gordon.
However, McAvennie predicted that Gordon has what it takes to reach the heights of the Sweden international and praised him for fitting in “wonderfully” on Tyneside.
“I think he could become a star like Isak, he could be just as good, that’s is how highly I rate him”, he told Football Insider.
“He has the right temperament and he was excellent against Tottenham and he ripped them apart.
“He won every fight.
“He’s a really good player.
“Sometimes the grass isn’t always greener when you leave a club.
“He left Everton but now he’s on fire.
“Look at Chelsea – so many players have gone there thinking they’re going to win trophies, but they would have been better off staying where they were!
“I think Gordon is enjoying in there at Newcastle.
“He plays some wonderful football and I don’t think he’d want to leave.”
