Newcastle have ‘phenomenal’ secret weapon in survival bid after what I spotted at Man United – pundit

Frank McAvennie was blown away by the noise made by Newcastle fans as their side drew with Man United on Monday.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the fans can play a big role in the club’s relegation fight.

Newcastle played out a 1-1 draw with Man United on Monday (27 December) though they had enough chances to win the game.

Jacob Murphy hit the post with minutes to go before Miguel Almiron forced David de Gea into an incredible save.

Newcastle were backed by their fans all night and McAvennie was blown away by what he heard.

“I watched Newcastle against Manchester United on TV,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“My God, what a noise from that stadium. That is real support, just phenomenal.

“You can still sense the relief from Ashley going. I haven’t heard St James’ like that in years.

“It must be some feeling for those players. And people talk about how the fans can carry you to safety.

“Don’t get me wrong, Newcastle were magnificent but the fans played a huge role in that draw.

“I was gutted they didn’t get a win there but if the stadium is like that every time they play, they can beat anyone.

“I know what it’s like to play with the whole stadium backing you, you feel 1000 feet tall. It’s a secret weapon.

“The fans have a huge role to play, they won’t give up.”
