Like Shelvey, Gayle is another who is looking to prove his worth for inclusion in the starting XI. With Joselu yet again failing to find the net, Gayle was the man entrusted by Benitez to turn the game around.
Full of running, there were few chances for the English striker to feed on, but there is every chance he will start when Liverpool visit St James’ Park.
Jesus Gamez – 7
Replacing Chancel Mbemba on the left side of defence with less than 10 minutes to go, the experienced Spanish defender posed an immediate attacking threat, lashing wide from a half volley. Not threatened defensively as Newcastle pushed for an equaliser.
