Newcastle plot late Anthony Elanga swoop after Almiron twist – sources
Newcastle United are still considering a late swoop to sign Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Magpies will face difficulties should they make a move after having left it so late in the window.
Forest are reluctant to see a key player leave at this late stage.
Sources say any move to sign a new right-winger before the 11pm deadline will hinge on whether Miguel Almiron can be moved on first.
The Paraguayan could still leave St James’ Park in the closing stages of the window amid links to Fulham, and his exit would force Newcastle’s hand in the market.
Signing a winger had been a priority for Newcastle this summer, but they must get Almiron off the books before they can explore a deal.
Interest in Elanga, meanwhile, has been long-standing as Football Insider revealed in June that a move was considered as part of Elliot Anderson’s transfer.
Newcastle United eye late Anthony Elanga transfer with Nottingham Forest
Elanga made the move to the City Ground from Manchester United in July 2023 and has established himself as a key player under Nuno Espirito Santo.
His five goals and nine assists in 39 appearances across all competitions last season landed him on Eddie Howe’s radar ahead of the summer window.
However, no move materialised despite initial talks taking place earlier in the window, as the club opted to assess other areas of the team.
After right-winger Yankuba Minteh was sold to Brighton to help the club avoid potential PSR issues, the Magpies were left short of quality options on the right-hand side.
They had been linked to Chelsea star Noni Madueke among others earlier in the window, but no formal bids materialised.
Despite this, the club have gone to deadline day without any concrete moves to sign a new option on the right-hand side of Howe’s attack.

Almiron’s future had been up in the air throughout the summer window, but a proposed move to Saudi Arabia fell through as they were unable to find an agreement.
His continued presence has prevented the club from making a move to sign a new option – so a late move for the Paraguayan will be necessary to set the wheels in motion.
