Newcastle ‘pushing to agree Calvert-Lewin deal’ after Everton twist
Newcastle United are set to push for the signing of Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer come the end of the season.
That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game as he exclusively told Football Insider that the deal would make sense and benefit all parties.
The 27-year-old’s likely availability on a free makes him the ideal option for Eddie Howe’s side, who remain in a difficult financial situation due to profit and sustainability rules.
That, on top of his Premier League experience and quality, have made him one of their top targets to provide depth in attacking areas.
Alexander Isak remains Newcastle’s first-choice striker, but with Callum Wilson widely expected to move on at the end of his contract, Calvert-Lewin is one they will look to sign.
Brown previously told Football Insider that David Moyes is set to make a last-ditch attempt to convince the striker to remain at Goodison Park beyond the end of the season.
However, as things stand, his contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, and the Magpies are thought to be among a number of clubs keeping an eye on his situation.
Newcastle United ‘all over’ Dominic Calvert-Lewin deal
Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Newcastle view Calvert-Lewin as “the perfect Wilson replacement” and are likely to swoop come the end of the season.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that the striker represents the best option to provide depth behind Isak in Howe’s side.
“I think it’s time for him to move on from Everton,” he told Football Insider.
“If he does become available on a free, Newcastle are going to be in that race because they haven’t got a lot of depth in terms of quality strikers.
“He’ll obviously be behind Isak in the pecking order, but he’s a better option than Wilson – and I think we’ve said before it looks like he’s going to be leaving.
“If they were to look elsewhere for that kind of option, what strikers are available with his experience and quality who aren’t going to cost too much?
“Obviously the fact it’s a free transfer would be a boost for Newcastle in terms of their finances.
“That’s the main thing with Newcastle, they’re in a difficult situation in terms of spending money.

“So when a striker like that becomes available on a free, I expect they’ll be all over it.
“That looks like one they’ll be pushing to get over the line at the end of the season because it makes sense for all parties.”
