Newcastle stars respond to four-word Bruno Guimaraes message

Bruno Guimaraes has become a mainstay of the Brazilian national team since his move to Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies had a season to remember in 2024–25 and Guimaraes was at its heart in their midfield, as Newcastle beat Liverpool to win the EFL Cup and lift their first trophy in over 70 years.

Champions League qualification was sealed despite Newcastle’s final-day defeat by Everton to add the icing on a successful campaign, with an £80million windfall secured in the process by Howe’s side.

Guimaraes was named as Newcastle’s captain last summer and his form has justified Howe’s decision, with Champions League football likely to dispel any talk of the Brazilian leaving St. James’ Park.

Guimaraes underlines ‘will to win’ in new message

Arsenal were one of several clubs who had lined up a move for Guimaraes this summer, but Newcastle are now well placed to keep their skipper as well as the likes of Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali.

The Magpies captain has won 30 of his 33 Brazil caps since signing for Newcastle in 2022 as one of the first moves made by the Saudi Arabian’s Public Investment Fund, and his form has warranted these caps.

Although injury prevented another call-up for Joelinton ahead of Brazil’s matches against Ecuador and Paraguay this month, Guimaraes posted on Instagram after he met up with his international team-mates.

In a post (3 June) liked by Newcastle compatriots Joelinton, Kieran Trippier, William Osula, Matt Targett and Sean Longstaff, Guimaraes said; “a will to win”, alongside four Brazilian flags.

Newcastle transfer spree planned as Guimaraes stays put

Failure to reach the Champions League could have spelled doom for the composition of Howe’s squad, as Newcastle likely would have been forced to sell players such as Isak, Guimaraes, Tonali and others.

Instead, the Magpies will look to strengthen with an extra £80–100m in their potential transfer kitty, and this could see Newcastle resurface their interest in the likes of Porto and Spain striker Samu Aghehowa.

PSR regulations will still result in departures at St. James’ Park, but while Howe may be happy for Sean Longstaff and even players like Nick Pope to leave this summer, he’ll be even more delighted to keep his star men.
