Newcastle-Tanganga move suggested after BBC’s Tottenham talks update – pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested Tottenham should send Japhet Tanganga on loan to Newcastle United if they are to sanction a temporary move.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker insisted the 22-year-old would benefit from playing Premier League football rather than heading overseas.
As reported by BBC Sport on Friday (21 January), Spurs are in talks with AC Milan over a potential loan move this month.
The Lilywhites will reportedly make a decision after Sunday’s game against Chelsea.
However, Whelan suggested a move to another Premier League side would be better for the defender’s development.
He mooted a move to relegation-threatened Newcastle as a possible destination.
Asked where Spurs should send Tanganga if they do sanction a loan, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “A Premier League side, absolutely.
“Premier League football, getting that experience, that would benefit Tottenham, it would certainly benefit going somewhere like Newcastle.
“He hasn’t had too much Premier League experience but he has played in the Premier League and he’s a very good defender.
“He can also play that wing-back role if need be. It gives you options.”
Tanganga made five appearances from a possible nine since Antonio Conte’s arrival.
He has played a total of 18 times for Spurs this season.
Conte has the likes of Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon to call on at centre-back.

Meanwhile, Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty are Spurs’ other right-back options.
Tanganga has a total of 42 appearances under his belt for Tottenham since breaking through the youth ranks.
