Newcastle tipped to make ‘unbelievable’ Sterling their marquee signing after update – Kenny

Paddy Kenny has suggested the new Newcastle United owners could make Manchester City star Raheem Sterling their marquee signing.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League goalkeeper claimed the 26-year-old’s contract situation could make a move possible.

As quoted by Sky Sports at the Financial Times Business of Sport US summit, Sterling admitted he would consider leaving City in pursuit of more game time.

He admitted he needs to be playing for his own “happiness”.

Sterling is contracted at City until 2023 and, as reported by the Sun, is unsure about signing a new deal.

He reportedly wants assurances over his game time, having only started twice in seven Premier League appearances this season.

With the winger’s future at City by no means certain, Kenny suggested Newcastle could make him one of their first superstar signings.

Discussing potential additions, Kenny told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: ” Sterling could be one.

“He’ll be out of contract in 2023, he’ll only have 12 months left next summer so who knows? Patience is key, they’re not going to fire into the top four this season.

“It’s been going on a while, they haven’t agreed terms. He’s been saying that he could move on. I don’t know what’s going to happen with that one.

“He’s not like he was two or three years ago when he was firing. I feel like his game’s dropped a little bit since then.

“Listen, don’t get me wrong, he’s still an unbelievable player on his day but it’ll be interesting to see where that one goes. Will Man City want to cash in at some point if he’s not going to sign a new deal?”

Sterling has won three Premier League titles, five League Cups and an FA Cup at City.
