Newcastle tipped to meet ‘extortionate’ Carlos asking price after new development – pundit

Newcastle United will meet Sevilla’s demands in their pursuit of Diego Carlos.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ urgent need for reinforcements.

On 6 January, The Athletic reported Newcastle had an opening bid for Carlos, 28, turned down by Sevilla.

Newcastle

According to The Times on Wednesday, (12 January), have submitted a fresh bid in the region of £28million for the central defender.

Newcastle have the second-worst defensive record in the league this season and after a draw against Watford on Saturday (15 January) the club are staring relegation in the face.

Kenny claims Newcastle will become desperate and pay Sevilla’s asking price for Carlos.

“There is no time for Newcastle to mess around,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Look at where they are in the table, it’s really not looking good.

“But, Newcastle have the money. None of the other clubs around them have that.

“If things don’t improve then I’m sure they will get desperate and pay whatever Sevilla ask for, even if it is extortionate.

“The guy looks a quality defender and god knows Newcastle need quality defenders.

“They have one of the worst defences in the league and wins come from the back.

“You need to be able to keep clean sheets, Carlos will help them do that.”

Eddie Howe’s side have signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood this month.

Their arrivals have so far failed to inspire a turnaround in the Magpies’ woeful form.
