Newcastle tipped to win four-club race for Digne after source’s update today – pundit
Frank McAvennie claims Newcastle will win the race for Everton defender Lucas Digne.
The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists Eddie Howe’s side are an attractive proposition.
As reported by the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards on Tuesday (4 January), Newcastle are plotting a move for Digne, 28, after his fallout with Rafael Benitez.
A Newcastle source has told Football Insider today they are now working on multiple other signings and one of them is Digne.
As per Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett on Tuesday (4 January) West Ham, Chelsea and another unnamed club also want to sign the defender.
McAvennie insists Newcastle will win the race for Digne.
“They can offer more and they are showing their ambitions by trying to sign Trippier,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“West Ham seem pretty happy with their options so I’m not sure they will break the bank for him.
“I know Chelsea need a left-back but the is something about this Newcastle project other than the money.
“Don’t get me wrong, the money is a big part of it. If any club can challenge Newcastle financially, it’s Chelsea.
“So it’s a choice of play every week in front of some of the best fans in the country or go to Chelsea and maybe not play with Alonso there.
“If it’s the same money, I can see Digne picking Newcastle. He’s a big name and the fans will love that.”

Football Insider revealed Kieran Trippier is jetting into Newcastle today (5 January) to complete a medical.
This comes after an £18million deal was agreed with Atletico Madrid.
