Newcastle United fans are raging ‘and they have every right to be’ – pundit
Newcastle United supporters were right to protest the “nightmare” inflicted by TV broadcasters at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United fans have a “reason to be angry” and were justified in protesting TV broadcasters’ choice of kick-off times.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie blasted broadcasters for causing fans a “nightmare” when going to away games.
Crowds unfurled banners at St James’ Park ahead of their Premier League clash against Luton Town on Saturday (3 February) reading “TV before fans” – a direct dig at broadcasters.
Two London-based games Premier League against Chelsea and West Ham have been moved for broadcasting purposes, which has impacted fans’ ability to make the over 500-mile round trip.
McAvennie acknowledged that TV channels pay hefty fees for the rights to broadcast Premier League matches, but was adamant that they do not consider the impact it has on match-going supporters.
“Of course, they have a reason to be angry,” he told Football Insider.
“The TV channels are paying an awful lot of money for rights, but sometimes you need to think of the fans.
“There’s rail strikes and late kick-offs and no trains leaving after 11 o’clock.
“They just don’t get it. Fans go down to London or wherever and they’ve got to get back to Newcastle.
“It’s a nightmare.
“This doesn’t just happen in England either, it’s happening in Scotland too – and not just the Premiership.
“It’s all very strange and bizarre and they don’t think about the fans at all.”
