‘I need this’ – Joselu makes honest admission over disappointing form for Newcastle
By Russell Edge
Newcastle United striker Joselu has admitted that he needed his goal against Liverpool after his recent poor form.
The Spanish striker has had a mixed start to life on Tyneside, having arrived at the club from Premier League rivals Stoke City over the summer.
The 27-year-old scored on his first start, and second appearance, for the Magpies in a convincing 3-0 win over West Ham, before putting in a hard day’s shift up front in the 1-0 win away at Swansea.
However his impressive form deserted him when his former side visited St James’ Park, as he passed up no less than three clear cut opportunities to prove his old manager Mark Hughes wrong about letting him leave.
While Newcastle rescued the victory despite the Spaniard’s profligacy, the same could not be said about the defeat at Brighton, where he again failed to find the back of the net despite being handed several glaring opportunities.
He managed to get back on the score sheet with a fortuitous goal in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool, and made the honest admission that he needed that strike after his previous performances.
He told the Chronicle: ” I know I had a couple of big chances in the last few games but football is like that.
“You maybe miss a chance and then you score maybe five goals in the next three weeks.
“(Scoring against Liverpool) I felt ‘Yes! I need this’. It was very important for me and the team and the fans.
“I know I will score and I know I will miss chances. I don’t think about the (missed) chances. The good thing is I try to work hard every week to try to do my best every weekend and the results are there.”
Newcastle currently sit ninth in the Premier League table after their opening seven matches, with three wins and a draw under their belt.
Their next outing sees them make the long journey to the south coast, where they will face Southampton on Sunday.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the Magpies are said to still be in the hunt for this reported former target.
